Part P (Competant Persons Scheme)

You may have heard about Part P and wondered what it is?

In the UK the requirements for the buildings we live and work in are governed by standards set by the UK government:

https://www.gov.uk/topic/planning-development/building-regulations

The section which affects electrical installations is Part P of the building regulations

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/competent-person-scheme-current-schemes-and-how-schemes-are-authorised#current-schemes

The full list of Approved Documents relating to Building Control is available from:

https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/approved-documents

The sections which relate to Electricity are mainly Parts: P, A, B, F, L, M, R

You can check whether an electrician is registered by searching using your postcode of the Electrical Compentant Persons website. Many electricians are not registered and may not even be qualified.

http://www.electricalcompetentperson.co.uk/ (This was formerly the Electrical Safety Register and you may still see it listed on some vehicles used by electrical contactors)

So what is Part P? This article on the Electrical Safety First website describes Part P in detail.
